Back on the Road

Why this trip? Why now?

The original idea was to do a trip around the world in the first half of 2018, because we expected our five-year-old twins to be schooled in only in the fall of that year. The plan was to start in South Africa, head to Sri Lanka from there, continue with Australia and New Zealand, followed by Brazil, the USA and finally Canada.

Funnily, both my wife and I came up with the idea at pretty much the same time. She had been inspired by several family world tour travel blogs, particularly “Somewhere Slower”. I had developed the idea after hanging a map of the world on a wall at the office: While looking at it together with a few others and identifying various places around the world where our clients are based, I thought we should do a tour from the Bahamas to Taiwan and Australia and visit all of our clients. In addition, the designer who takes care of my firm’s corporate design, had been doing a world tour himself, combining both travel and work with Out-Of-Office at oooyeah.de.

Things turned out differently. For many different reasons, our children and us will now be embarking on a special school journey. They will attend what I would call the “entry class” of a Waldorf School in Berlin, and that will be starting this September. Hence, the world tour project will not be realized anytime soon, since home schooling is not allowed in Germany.

But was that it? No trip at all? – We spontaneously decided to do the “Summer in North America” tour instead, as it was the final part of our original world tour itinerary and because touring the northern hemisphere during the months of June, July and August makes more sense.

In addition, and as you will already have noticed about this blog, I maintain a strong connection to the USA and thought that this would be an opportunity to reconnect with parts of my American past. And as my wife was an exchange student in Idaho and had been working in Los Angeles while I was studying in Atlanta, it is close to her heart, too.
